Unions are seeking clarification on the future of the Audi factory in Brussels amidst speculations about its uncertain prospect. A two-week temporary unemployment break has just commenced at the plant.

Audi is restructuring its global production network, according to reports by De Tijd, the German Automobilwoche magazine, and the Reuters news agency. As a result, the Brussels factory could be left without a model to produce after 2027. The production of the electric Q8 model, currently made in Brussels, is reportedly set to be relocated to Mexico and China.

Audi Brussels factory's spokesperson, Peter D'hoore, stated that he does not wish to respond to rumours.

The details being circulated in various media have caused unease, said ACV union representative Ronny Liedts, who affirmed that factory volumes are already declining. The production lines' suspension for the next two weeks is officially due to a parts shortage. However, the union official says that sales of the model are also dropping.

"We are in talks with the management to see how we will organise the factory in the coming years. The question is what will happen after 2027. It is clear that there will be surplus staff," reveals the union representative. He expresses particular concern for the approximately 500 temporary workers. Nearly 3,000 people are employed at Audi Brussels, besides the temporary staff.

Tensions had also risen at the end of the last year when the factory management announced the suspension of the Q4 model production. Although it has been proven that the factory can build this model, there is presently no prospect of an order.
