One in five residents of Flanders believes that Antwerp’s mayor, Bart De Wever of the N-VA party, should be the next Belgian Prime Minister, according to a survey carried out by several media outlets.
At the same time, approximately 15% of Flemish respondents expressed their wish for De Wever not to lead the country. The rejection of him leading is even more pronounced in Wallonia and Brussels.
The second most popular candidate in Flanders the current Prime Minister, Alexander De Croo (Open VLD), with a 9.3% approval rating. De Croo's popularity is well below De Wever’s, although only 11% of Flemish residents surveyed believe he should not be reappointed as Prime Minister.
In third place is Tom Van Grieken, the leader of the right-wing nationalist Flemish party Vlaams Belang, with a rating of 7.2%.
Conner Rousseau, the former leader of the Flemish socialist party Vooruit, continues to feature despite his popularity falling from 15% six months ago to 5% among respondents.
The online survey, which collects responses from 2,681 Belgians aged 18 years and older, has a margin of error of 3.1% for Flanders.
