The Model United Nations Society Belgium, a collective of students from various Belgian universities, won the World Championships of Student Diplomacy for the 11th time, it announced on Thursday.
Held in Taiwan, this year marks their fourth consecutive victory in this prestigious Model United Nations diplomatic competition. Organised annually by Harvard University, the championship simulates United Nations procedures. Over four days, between 1,000 and 1,500 young people from around 100 countries served as diplomats, representing countries other than their own.
The Belgian inter-university team comprises 23 students, all from major Belgian universities including UNamur, UCLouvain, ULB, KU Leuven, VUB and UAntwerpen.

This year, Belgium notably represented Pakistan, Canada, and Denmark, according to Nick Swinnen, the president of the Belgian delegation. Several topical issues were at the heart of the conference, including cybersecurity, energy transition, nuclear energy, and migration in Syria. These themes are also on the United Nations agenda.
Once again, Belgium reached the top of the podium. "We have once again underscored just how Belgium is known for its diplomatic skills and sense of compromise," commented budding diplomat Alexander Canetta.
