A 23-year-old cyclist died on Friday night after falling into the Leuven-Dyle canal at Hofstade, Flemish Brabant, confirmed by Hal-Vilvorde’s prosecutor’s office following several media reports.
Despite immediate attempts to revive him at the scene, these proved unsuccessful.
The incident took place between 22:00 and 22:30 on a towpath. The young man veered off track and fell into the water.
A passing witness promptly alerted the emergency services, who managed to pull the victim from the water with the assistance of a diver. However, the resuscitation efforts were ultimately ineffective, and the cyclist died at the scene.
A forensic doctor and a laboratory team were dispatched to the site to conduct an investigation. Initial evidence suggests that this was an accident.
