“Timbuktu” best film according to Belgian film critics

The film “Timbuktu”, from Mauritian director Abderrahmane Sissako, was given the top prize for 2015 from the Union of cinema critics. Since 1955, this organization has awarded the film that has most contributed to enriching the industry.

“Timbuktu” was chosen above “Kreuzweg” fom German director Dietrich Brüggerman, after a long debate.

“These two films show intolerance is not monopolized by just one religion. Timbuktu is a deeply human story, that the tragic events of the last few days show us is still very relevant”, says the Union.

The film tells the story of Tombouctou, in the north of Mali, who comes under the influence of Muslim fundamentalists. The film won the Palme d’Or at Cannes last summer.
