Juliette Binoche on stage in Antwerp

The French actress Juliette Binoche will take the title role in “Antigone” during a world tour starting on the 25th of February. Antigone is the Greek tragedy by Sophocles, which has been revisited by the Flemish director Ivo Van Hove. After Luxemburg and London, the cinema icon will perform at the deSingel artistic centre in Antwerp on the 1st to the 4th of April. All tickets have been sold out since last summer. The play will be interpreted into English, a new translation by the Canadian poet and Hellenist Anne Carson. “As explosive as an atomic bomb”, she explores “a new territory of humanity where individuals in a crisis situation evolve”, according to Ivo Van Hove.

“Ivo Van Hove has been a regular guest of ours since the 80s. We cannot miss this production (by the Luxemburg town theatre and the London Barbican)”, explains Jerry Aerts, the Director General of the deSingel. “The tickets were all sold last summer, probably due to the “Juliette Binoche” effect. We try to include a well-known figure from the cinema in our international program at least once a year”.
