The Cinema du Réel festival, which focusses on creative documentaries and ended in Paris on Friday, rewarded 2 Belgian films, amongst other prize recipients, reveals WBImages (the official broadcasting marketing agency in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation) on Sunday. “The 2 French-speaking Belgian films entered in the international competition, ‘Killing Time – Entre 2 fronts’ by Lydie Wisshaupt-Claudel, and ‘Noche herida (Nuit blessee/Injured night)’ by Nicolas Rincon Gille, both go home with an award,” they add. ‘Killing Time’ is a Belgian-French co-production and won the Cinema du reel Grand Prize. “Killing Time immerses us in the vast Marines complex of Twentynine Palms in the California desert, where many young soldiers barely grown-up transit on their way to Iraq and Afghanistan. Between leave periods and training periods, they kill time, on their own, with army mates, or with family, in surroundings eerily similar to the environment they have just left,” sums up WBImages.
Lydie Wisshaupt-Claudel has filmed in the United States before, as she already directed the 2012 documentary Sideroads, in which she met Americans living on the West coast.
The international jury also gave a special award to ‘Noche herida’ by Nicolas Rincon Gille. The film describes a grandmother living in Bogota. The first part of the trilogy of which ‘Noche herida’ is the third film, ‘En lo Escondido’ (What is hidden), already won an award at the same festival in 2007.
