Around 150 Kurds gathered in Liège on Wednesday afternoon to protest against the Turkish authorities' lack of reaction to the siege by the Islamic State of the Syrian city of Kobane. Police arrested three people, unconnected to the event, who disrupted the protest. The peaceful rally began at 2:00p.m., at Liège's Place Saint-Lambert, opposite the former courthouse. Organizers announced a thousand people, but police claimed there were about 150 participants.
The Belgian Kurds were protesting against to protest against the Turkish authorities' lack of reaction to the violence committed in Kobane, a Kurdish city in northern Syria on the Turkish border, currently under siege by Islamic State jihadists. The protesters also called for a faster response to the crisis by the international community.
The gathering initially took place peacefully until three young people, unconnected to the event, started throwing insults at the protestors as the demonstration was breaking up just before 4.00p.m. which created confusion within the crowd. The three instigators were arrested by police.
