Employment: Wallonia still feeling effects of 2008 crisis

Job seeker numbers in Wallonia are still not back to where they were in 2008, the year before the economic and financial crisis, states a Forem study analysing the effect the crisis has had on employment in the Wallonia region, and reported by Sudpresse newspapers on Tuesday. The number of people in employment is lower than it was six years ago. "The effects of the 2008 crisis were initially felt in 2009. There was then an upturn in 2010 and 2011, followed by a second spell of turmoil in 2012 and 2013. Since early 2014, we have been wavering between the two", says Gery Choteau, employment market analyst for Forem.

In comparison to August 2009 figures (at the height of the first crisis), unemployment has fallen slightly, but employment rates are still not yet back to where they were in August 2008. In August 2014, job seekers in Wallonia totalled 263.810, compared to 251,181 in the same month, 2008.
