Police warn people with old driving licenses

Motorists who have a driving license issued before 1989 could have problems abroad, police have warned. “The people concerned should exchange their licenses for a new copy, which is in the form of a bank card”, reads the Het Nieuwsblad op Zontag. “The driving licenses concerned are those issued before 1989, when “Belgian” licenses were still given out. But driving licenses have since been adapted to the European format”, explains Tinne Hollevoet, from the Federal police.

Holders of old licenses, which differ slightly from more recent ones, could have problems abroad, where police services could make mistakes in certain areas.

Changing your old license for a new one costs around 20 to 25 euros.
