Nuclear plants equipped with thermal cameras to detect drones
Monday, 06 April 2015
Belgian nuclear power plants have recently been equipped with thermal cameras in a bid to prevent drones from flying over them, reported the De Standaard, Het Nieuwsblad and Het Belang van Limburg newspapers on Saturday. Drones have breached Belgian nuclear sites, Doel in particular, several times in the past. The security services have therefore requested plant managers implement measures to deal with the drone phenomenon.
As a result, thermal cameras have been installed on and around nuclear sites in a bid to detect any intruding drone as quickly as possible, said Home Secretary, Jan Jambon. Staff have also received training to enable them to raise the alarm quickly.
Electrabel and the AFNC (Federal Agency for Nuclear Control) confirmed that “measures” have been taken to protect plants from drones.
