Belgian supermarkets have started to close the price gap with neighbouring countries for the first time, according to an analysis by the Study bureau Nielson. L’Echo spoke about it on Thursday. Price levels in Belgium remain higher than abroad, but Belgium has become more competitive for the first time. Several factors have led to this reduction in price differences. “Fresh products have gone down: vegetables fell by 7.5%, fruit fell by 5%, and fish has also gone down”, says Tom Penninckx, client business partner at Nielson. “There is also the Albert Heijn effect in Flanders, the pressure of e-commerce, the growth of hard discount stores, and we are seeing lots of promotion campaigns”.
