Antwerp local authorities find Uber arrival “premature”

Antwerp local authorities feel that the arrival of controversial transport company Uber would still be premature this year. The Belgian head of the company, Filip Nuytemans, had made the announcement however in L’Echo and Tijd on Wednesday. “Before anything happens, Uber – like any other innovating actor in the taxi sector – must make a proposal within existing legislation, and that is not the case for now,” revealed the Antwerp alderman in charge of Mobility, Koen Kennis (N-VA).

However, Antwerp local authorities have already met with managers of the company. “We expressed our good faith, and the fact that we are willing to act as mediators with the taxi industry,” adds the alderman.

“But Uber must agree to negotiate with the industry, and submit a legally viable proposal. We are talking social legislation, VAT rules, fees, the legal framework around licensing, and insurance for drivers and clients.”
