60 to 70 residents of a holding centre for asylum seekers in Arendonk (Antwerp Campine region) came to blows at lunchtime on Tuesday over a trivial incident, has announced the centre‘s management representative. There were no casualties but one of the centre’s assistants has been taken to hospital for a check-up, during which time order was restored to the centre.

“A small incident sparked a brawl which quickly gathered momentum,” explained director Joan Ramakers. “We called the police and 8 vans arrived promptly at the scene. Our staff were able to identify six people guilty of breaking the centre’s rules. They have been excluded until further notice. We have to make it clear that we will not tolerate violence of this sort, “he added.
