Terrorist threat hampers visitor numbers in shopping centres

The fifteen largest shopping centres in Belgium, recorded a decrease of 2.7 % in visitor numbers during the course of the last quarter of 2015. This is so when compared to the last quarter of 2014. “The terrorist threat has undoubtedly had an effect,” stated the Belgian Luxembourg Council of Shopping Centers (BLSC) in a press release on Monday.

These shopping centres attracted 24 million people during the last three months of 2015. Across the whole year, 88.7 million shoppers came through the doors of these fifteen shopping centres, or 1.4% less than in 2014 and 2.7% less than in 2013.

The main centres in terms of shop rental space are the Wijnegem Shopping Center, l'Esplanade de Louvain-la-Neuve and City 2. City 2 remained closed for a few days last November, whilst Brussels was on terrorist threat alert level 4.
