There was a silent commemoration in Termonde on Saturday morning, seven years after the Fabeltjesland crèche massacre, committed by Kim De Gelder. “We continue to meet, as none of us have forgot what happened”, said local mayor Piet Buyse.
Representatives from the communal administration, the CPAS, and the local police and fire departments laid flowers at the foot of a commemorative wall at 11am, in memory of the victims.
On the 23rd of January 2009, Kim De Gelder killed 2 babies and a 54 year old woman inside the Fabeltjesland crèche. He also admitted to killing a woman in her seventies in Vrasene on the 16th of January, just a few days earlier. The Ghent Assizes court sentenced him to life in prison on the 22nd of March 2013, after he was convicted of four murders and 25 attempted murders.
The last civil case involving him will be heard on the 15th of February. It involves damages and interest for one of the workers at the crèche. She broke down during the trial, and was not able to testify. The amount of damages she will receive has not yet been fixed.
