The mayors of thirteen Flemish cities, including Antwerp led by Bart De Wever, the President of the New Flemish Alliance, will write to the Minister of the Interior, Jan Jambon. They wish to complain about the pressure placed on their police forces. This is reported today (Thursday) by several Flemish media sources.
In the mayors’ eyes, the federal government is placing excessive pressure on local police zones to be involved in achieving particular missions, such as local surveillance of border zones with France and West Flanders. This is stressed by the Mayor of Ghent, Daniel Termont.
This discontent affects all of Belgium and the police forces have had enough.
The 189 local police zones have refused to collaborate on a number of occasions.
At the beginning of the month, there were 1,800 refusals, of which 1,058 were for surveillance missions for Brussels Airport or the Brussels Metro.
