The Parliamentary Investigative Commission on Terrorism (“the Commission”) has written to the leaders of the Great Mosque of Brussels to request the transmission of a number of documents to it.
It emerged from a working session, held in camera, this morning that the commission members were not satisfied by the responses that they received to their questions on Monday.
On Monday, the Commission heard the Deputy Imam of the Great Mosque in the Cinquantenaire Park, Galaye N'Diaye, during the course of its work on radicalism.
The spiritual leader barely said anything in response to questions around the financing of the Islamic and Cultural Centre of Belgium (the CICB), stating that he was not competent in this sphere.
His responses regarding the Islam currently being taught in the mosque, or his assertion that no jihadist who left for Syria from Belgium had attended the mosque, also left committee members somewhat perplexed. This seemed to contradict previous evidence heard by the Commission.
The Commission is awaiting a clear answer from the Centre to its various questions.
The Commission stressed today, “If the CICB refuses to delegate an individual who is able to respond satisfactorily to us, the Head of the Commission, Patrick Dewael, will not hesitate to summon leaders of the centre to appear before it, or indeed ask for relevant documents, as is allowed by law.”
