Belgian hosts generated an average of €2,300 by renting out their homes on the Airbnb platform in 2016. This is per figures from the newspaper L’Echo published today.

L’Echo states this is an average which encompassed a wide range of properties generating variable incomes.

In total, 12,500 property owners used the service in 2016, or an increase of nearly 20% over a year.

In terms of the quantity of accommodation on offer, Brussels leads the pack with 5,100 accommodation hosts, ahead of Flanders (4,900) and Wallonia (2,500).

The average income generated by Airbnb in Wallonia is, on the other hand, higher (€2,000) than in Brussels (€1,800).

In 2016, Belgian accommodation put up more than 600,000 people.

With four Airbnb accommodation units per 1,000 inhabitants, Brussels lags behind compared to other large European cities, such as Paris (with 29 accommodation units per 1,000 inhabitants) or Amsterdam (with 16).
