Belgium is to send a team from the Victim Identification Division (known as the “DVI” ) of the federal police to Sierra Leone. The aim is to help in the effort to identify deceased individuals, following the floods and landslides which have affected the country. This has been announced by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Didier Reynders, responding to the appeal launched by the Sierra Leone government.
These floods, the most serious in the recent history of this poor West African country, caused 499 deaths. This was observed in an assessment prepared on Sunday by the central morgue in Sierra Leone's capital Freetown.
