About 65 Greenpeace activists on Monday installed a banner bearing the inscription ‘Go Solar’ at the Schuman Roundabout in Brussels to ask the European Union to come out fully in favor of 100% renewable energy. They also covered the roundabout with a biodegradable yellow painting depicting the sun, but had to withdraw the symbol at the request of the police.
“It’s high time the EU liberated the energy system, which is today in the hands of a few big actors who continue to invest in pollutive fuels like charcoal, and handed it over to ordinary citizens,” said Greenpeace Belgium spokesperson Juliette Boulet. To organize the protection of the environment, Europe has, in fact, a “vast potential in the area of renewable energy.
The action in favour of renewable energy, which has also been organized in other European capitals, comes at a time when the European Union and its member States have to decide on the future of the European Energy System and the EU’s contributions to the fight against global warming.
A vote is, in fact, programmed for the 28th of November within the European Parliament’s Energy Commission on renewable energy projects. Then, on the 11th of December, it will be the electricity market's turn. The entire European Parliament will vote in early 2018.
