The SNCB orders thousands of connected watches to improve punctuality

The SNCB will buy thousands of connected watches, tablets and smartphones in order to improve the punctuality of its trains. The public offer for the purchase of 6,000 connected watches, 7,000 tablets and 13,500 smartphones was launched last week. “This operation falls within our digitalization strategy,” specified Wednesday the company’s spokesperson, according to whom this equipment is intended for train drivers and attendants.

“The watches must improve the punctuality of trains. During the evening rush hour, for example, 84 trains must go through the north-south junction. It takes place to the split second,” explained the spokesperson. As for the tablets, they will allow the drivers to have an actualized work schedule, whereas the smartphones will be used for search of information on routes. These phones and watches will be in use as early as next year.

The public offer is open until 15 March. The investment amount has not been revealed.
