The Antwerp rabbi, Aaron Malinsky, wishes to be a candidate in the forthcoming communal elections, on the electoral list for the Christian Democratic and Flemish party (CD&V). The information is reported on Monday in the daily publications De Morgen and Het Laatste Nieuws. The man became popular when he first appeared in the game show broadcast De Slimste Mens ter Wereld some years ago.
It has not yet been decided whether the rabbi will appear on the Antwerp electoral list, although he has indicated that he is prepared to. He says that the outcome here will depend upon whether the Flemish Christian Democrats party specifically reserves him a place, as he wishes to be able to stand for election.
Mr Malinsky leads the most significant Jewish community in Antwerp. For several years, he has been committed to dialogue between Jews, Christians and Muslims. In 2006, he was a candidate for the socialist sp.a, but was not elected on that occasion.
