Doel 1 is only losing a few litres a day because of the leak, says Engie Electrabel

The reported leak within the nuclear section of Doel 1 is coming from soldering in the conduit of the reactor’s cooling system. The system is only losing a few litres a day, Engie Electrabel said on Saturday. The reactor’s reservoir will be emptied so that it can be repaired. The Federal Nuclear Control Agency (AFCN) has said the leak is “minimal and not a safety concern”.

“We are doing what is necessary to be able to start the repair work. The plant has to be shut down and the reservoir has to be emptied”, says Engie Electrabel’s spokesperson Anne-Sophie Hugé.

The work has to be planned so that staff are not exposed to radioactivity. The group has fixed the maximum level at 10 mSv (milliSievert), while the legal limit is 20 mSv.
