Belgium is a net beneficiary of family allowances

Each year, Belgium receives more in family allowances from other countries than it pays out abroad, according to the findings of a study by the University of Leuven’s Research Institute for Work and Society, HIVA, De Morgen daily reported on Wednesday. "The recent figures for 2016 show that our country is a net beneficiary,” said Jozef Pacolet, social security expert at the HIVA. In that year, Belgium paid out 101 million euros (1.6% of all allowances) to children being brought up in other countries and received at least 130 million euros from abroad for children in Belgium.

According to the Federal Agency for Family Allowances, Famifed, 121 million euros in family allowances were paid to 63,422 children living abroad in 2017.
