The Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM) will team up with the national postal service, bpost, to collect data on local weather conditions, according to reports in Mediahuis newspapers relayed on Wednesday by Sudpresse. This will be done under a pilot project that is the only one of its kind in Europe. Under the project, postal vans will automatically send out information on temperatures, rainfall, light, fog, and humidity anywhere in Belgium.
The project will start this year with 30 vehicles. If the results are conclusive, it will be extended to a larger portion of the bpost fleet.
IRM thus aims to use the postal service’s country-wide network of vehicles to collect data in real time.
