As the Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (N-VA) mayor of Lubbeck, Theo Francken has asked his commune’s three primary schools to adapt their programmes, paying “special attention to our Flemish identity and our history.” This request is not without relevance, with the 26 May elections just a few weeks away. The N-VA wants the Education Ministry and Francken’s name has been mentioned in this connection.
His call met with a less-than-favourable response from the opposition Open VLD in Lubbeck’s municipal council. “Salute the Flag!” the Open Vld representatives quipped.
“Not at all,” retorted the former Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration. “What’s wrong with promoting a sense of Flemish identity?”
