A silent vigil in honour of Julie Van Espen to be held on Wednesday night

A silent vigil will be held Wednesday from 21:00 to Merksem (Antwerp) in tribute to Julie Van Espen.

The meeting point is set at the bridge near the Sportpaleis, where the 23-year-old student was killed before being thrown into the Albert Canal.

The organisers of this initiative want to "give a signal that we are not satisfied with the failure of the judicial system", but also to show "that we are there for each other in case of hardship" and finally to show their compassion to Julie's loved ones. Those wishing to attend are invited to bring a white rose, candle or torch.

A silent march is also to be held in Antwerp on Sunday in protest against sexual abuse and harassment.
