Over 1,500 people take part in a vigil for Julie Van Espen in Antwerp
Between 1,500 and 3,000 people attended a vigil along the Albert Canal in Antwerp on Wednesday evening to pay tribute to Julie Van Espen. The organizers of the vigil asked people to bring a white rose and a torch or candle, and attendees honoured the victim through songs and music throughout the evening.

Those present wanted to show their support to the victim's relatives, but also to denounce the weaknesses of the judicial system, according to local media.  Political representatives and firefighters were also in attendance.

At the time of the incident, the suspect, who confessed to killing the young woman, was on parole pending an appeal decision. At first instance, he had been convicted of rape.
