The average pension for people in Belgium is too low to pay for a retirement home, according to new figures. On average, a Flemish person earns a pension of around 1,280 euros, while a retirement home costs around 1,728 euros a month, discovered VTM NIEUWS anchor Freek Braeckman in the tv programme ‘De Ronde van Freek’. “This means retirement home patients would have to pay around 450 euros out of their own pocket,” he said.
The total average pension in Belgium varies greatly, depending on whether someone is employed by the government, in the private sector, or self-employed. On average, men have a higher pension than women, which means it is mainly single women who have more difficulty paying for a retirement home than men.
Flemish Minister for Welfare Jo Vandeurzen (CD&V) started monitoring the prices of retirement homes in 2017 and said in March 2019 that this policy is paying off.
