President of the Flemish Parliament and Dessel mayor Kris Van Dijck (N-VA) was involved in a car accident early Wednesday morning.

Local police told the Belga agency that Mr Van Dijck caused the accident and was driving while under the influence of alcohol when it occurred. His car crashed into a lorry, but luckily no-one was injured.

“We were called to an accident and saw both vehicles had been damaged. We noticed the mayor was driving one of them,” said Bademo (Balen-Dessel-Mol) police officer Robert Lehaen.

“Because he is the president of our police department’s college and therefore our boss, we asked our colleagues at the Gael-Laakdal-Meerhout department to take over.”

According to police statements, Mr Van Dijck had 1.42 millilitres of alcohol in his blood. He had his driving licence confiscated for 6 hours.
