A pupil of an elementary school in the city of Ghent poked himself on an injection needle that a classmate found in the park across from the school during recess.

This is the second time something like this has happened in the same school. The previous time there was an incident with a needle was in 2017, after which certain measures were taken, according to Het Laatste Nieuws. The Alderman for Education in Ghent, Elke Decruynaere, will meet with the relevant authorities, the police and the mayor on Friday.

"Measures were taken after the previous needle discovery, such as an increased presence of the neighbourhood watch. I want to know whether this has been followed up on sufficiently, or whether additional measures are needed," Decruynaere said.

The boy was brought to the hospital immediately, where a blood sample was taken. The results have not come back yet, but the parents were told that the risk of infection is about zero, reports Het Nieuwsblad.
