A full tank of petrol or diesel will be up to €2.5 more expensive due to the higher share of biofuels starting from 1 January 2020.

The maximum price for Benzine 95 (E10) will increase by 3.8 euro cents on 1 January, making it €1.514 per litre. The price for Benzine 98 (E5) will be increased by up to 6 euro cents per litre, making the maximum price €1.602.

For diesel (B7), the price will increase by 2.9 euro cents, costing a maximum of €1.59 per litre.

The increase means that filling up a tank of 65 litres will cost €2.5 more starting from 2020 for petrol cars, and almost €2 for diesel cars. The diesel price will be at its highest level since November 2018, reports De Tijd.

Petrol and diesel are becoming more expensive as the share of biofuels in them is increasing slightly, causing the price for the consumers to increase as well, reports Het Laatste Nieuws.

A European directive obliges member states to increase the share of biofuel in diesel and petrol to 8.5%. Belgium will go one step further and increase the share to 9.6%.

Additionally, a second European directive obliges member states to reduce their CO2 emissions from fuels by 6% in 2020.
