One young Belgian in ten has no qualifications

In Belgium, 9.8% of young people between 18 and 24 have no secondary education qualifications and are not currently in training, La Dernière Heure reported on Tuesday. They were quoting figures from the Economy SPF. Flanders is the best student, with 7% of young people in this situation. Next is Wallonia, with 12.9%. Brussels is worst, with nearly one in six young people having no qualifications (14.4%). The EU objective is a figure of less than 10% for its member states.

Within the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, along with a precarious reorientation of struggling young people, absenteeism is also to blame. Last year, there were 14,683 cases, which is 22% for Brussels alone.

“We must learn to better handle failure. As soon as a student is struggling, the school has to listen”, says Ariane Baye, an education researcher at the ULg.
