The Federal Public Service for Foreign Affairs announced on Wednesday that Belgium will mobilise resources amounting to 1.5 million euros, channelled through UNICEF, to support local health centres in Guinea, currently fighting the Ebola outbreak. The funds, released by Ministry for Development Cooperation headed by Minister Alexander De Croo, will bring much needed assistance to the United Nations in its support of preventive health sanitary measures and medical centres in the most affected region of Guinea.
The money will be used to improve prevention and local medical facilities in the N’Zérékoré region, the epicentre of the Ebola outbreak and home to over a million people. UNICEF will use the money to support the region’s 3 Ebola Community Care Centres and over 400 Community Watch Committees (neighbourhood watch groups).
The pledge boosts the sum (over 37 million euros) Belgium has already provided humanitarian organisations with, in a bid to contain the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
