Almost 80 students and teachers from the Sint-Paulusinstituut in Herzele submitted to a tuberculosis screening test on Wednesday. This large scale test was carried out following the death of a 14-year-old student of complications from the contagious pulmonary infection on Monday, confirmed the Flemish Agency in charge of Health. The 80 people tested include 64 students, the rest being teachers. “They are mostly people who were close to the deceased student, whether on the playground, in morning activities, or sitting next to her in the cafeteria,” explains the Agency spokesperson. Results from the screening test are expected next Monday. Further tests may take place independently.

All the students from the deceased teenager’s class were screened last week, and one person was diagnosed. That student is currently being treated with prophylactics. 2 other students had unclear results and new tests must be done in 2 months. The last 8 students of the class were given the all-clear, as were their teachers.
