Jihadist Michael ‘Younes’ Delafortie admitted to being “relieved” after receiving a 3-year suspended sentence in light of time already served in preventive custody, by the criminal court in Antwerp on Wednesday. His attorney, Ergun Top, feels this shows that his client is not considered to be a terrorist on the loose. According to him, fighters back from Syria who haven’t participated in any killings are able to join society again.
The attorney does however admit to having mixed feelings. “On the one hand, we are sorry he has been sentenced as we deny his responsibility, but on the other hand, we have secured for him a relatively light sentence

“This shows that ‘Younes’ is not a freed terrorist on the verge of committing an attack, but a free citizen who has been given a second chance at fitting into society and who means to seize that opportunity fully.”

The same is true for other fighters who went to Syria, according to the attorney. “This is a clear indication that they can come back, explain their situation, and that, if they have no blood on their hands, they can be part of our society again. This is crucial.”
