Police will be able to “patrol” the Internet in the future. At the moment, they risk committing a procedural error if they get information via an anonymous Facebook account, or from any other Internet platform where a simple sign-up is required. However, the government wants to create a clear legal situation that makes it possible, L’Echo and De Tijd reported on Thursday. The proposed law drawn up by the Justice Minister Koen Geens (Christian Democrats) and the Home Affairs Minister Jan Jambon (New Flemish Alliance) got the go-ahead from the Privacy Commission. It has become urgent to sort the problem out. Most of the current laws date from before the Internet, but criminals are using the web more and more. The planned measures hope to put a stop to this.
