Police handed out 49 fines for ‘public corruption’ (to civil servants) last year, De Tijd reported on Saturday. That’s a 50% drop in 5 years.
One of the reasons police gave to explain this fall is a reduction in the number of civil servants.
Since 2011, corruption is no longer a priority on the national security plan. The number of investigators working on these cases has also been reduced by 25%.
The Public function Minister Steven Vandeput (New Flemish Alliance) said a federal internal audit department did checks on the 1st of July. These should allow better control within federal institutions.
