On Saturday, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office confirmed a 22 year old Belgian woman was arrested on the Greek island of Corfu. A European arrest warrant had been issued for the young woman, who is suspected of belonging to a terrorist organisation.

She was arrested on a ferry travelling between Bari (Italy) and Corfu on Friday. Italian authorities had alerted their Greek counterparts.

There was no information on when the arrest warrant was issued. “We don’t know which case the arrest is linked to”, the coastguard spokesman said.

Many terrorists who committed or planned to commit attacks in Western Europe have used this route through the Greek islands to reach Europe from the Middle-East.

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office has refused to give more information on the woman or the circumstances surrounding her arrest, “in the interests of the investigation”.
