Asylum seekers – Theo Francken wants sanctions to prevent constant appeals against deportations

The State Secretary for Asylum and Immigration, Theo Francken (New Flemish Alliance), wants to make it more difficult for illegal immigrants to contest deportations. He made this clear during an interview published in L’Echo and De Tijd on Saturday.

The deportation of illegal immigrants is particularly complex, and appeals are often submitted a short time before an applicant is to be deported. “That’s why we want to fine those who prolong the appeal process for no reason, well after their deportation has already been decided”, the State Secretary said.

Mr Francken wants to make it easier to sanction those who make constant appeals, mainly through fines. These sanctions would also apply to lawyers.
