    Brussels households spend 5.5 billion euros annually in retail

    Brussels households spend nearly 5.5 billion euros annually in the retail trade, of which 3 billion for consumer goods, Brussels Enterprise Accompaniment Agency (hub.brussels) revealed today in a study. The Brussels-Capital Region totals 542,000 households. Each household spends on average 9,200 euros on retail goods per year. 

    For everyday necessities, Brussels households prefer buying close to home, especially in privileged neighbourhoods such as Auderghem Centre (4.5%), Jette Centre (3.6%) and Uccle Centre (3.2%).

    Brussels households spend each year 1.5 billion euros on lightweight semi-everyday purchases such as clothing, shoes, books or sporting goods. “The city centre (of Brussels), which hosts nearly 3,000 sales outlets, including 700 specialized in the sale of light semi-everyday consumer products, is well ahead, attracting alone more than a quarter of the territory’s spending households,” hub.brussels said. 
     
    The remainder focuses on a few places: Haut de la Ville (Chaussée d’Ixelles, Avenue de la Toison dOr, Goulet Louise) and two shopping centres (Woluwe and Westland). These collect over 50% of Brussels households annual expenditure for lightweight semi-regular purchases. 
     
    For purchases of lightweight semi-current goods, Brussels-Centre is highest with 25.7% market share, followed by Woluwe Shopping Centre (10.6%), Haut de la Ville (8.7%), online shopping (6%) and Westland Shopping Centre (5.6%). 

    Lastly, the study shows that Brussels households spend €1 billion each year in heavy semi-everyday goods such as handiwork materials, furniture, etc. “Within the regional territory, heavy semi-everyday purchases focus on certain areas that group major retailers. The main shopping destination is the commercial zone which hosts the only Ikea in the Brussels region. It gathers more than 10% of household spending,” hub.brussels notes. Followed by, Brussels-Centre (9.2% market share), Zaventem-Ikea (8.4%) and Basilix Shopping Centre (5.5%).
