Head of air traffic control operator Skeyes is “confident” that upcoming negotiations will put an end to the strikes that have been disrupting Belgian airspace since the beginning of the year.

As the summer holidays draw near, Skeyes and union representatives are set to meet on June 11 to continue negotiations and discuss two preliminary agreements.

"Both air traffic controllers and [Skeyes] management want people to be able to go on holidays after a years' work," Skeyes CEO Johan Decuyper said, adding that he did not believe "anyone" would want to risk that possibility.

"I'm pretty confident about that," he said.

Belgian airspace has had shut down on several occasions this year due to social tensions between the traffic controller's management and employees, resulting in significant delays, cancellations, or diversions of flights, both in and out of Belgium.

Decuyper said that the disturbances "obviously impacted Skeyes' image," and that his objective now is to get things back to normal "as soon as possible."
