Vincent Kompany named “New European of the Year”

The Red Devils player Vincent Kompany received the “New European of the Year” award at the European Parliament on Thursday evening.
It was awarded for the first time this year. It is given to an immigrant European citizen. Vincent Kompany was chosen by the international jury unanimously. The jury was made up of European politicians, and representatives of the business world and non-governmental organisations.

Kompany “has got himself noticed internationally, not only for his football talent, but also for his spirit, his entrepreneurial talent, his social commitment and his voluntary work. His character and his perseverance make him one of the best footballers in the world. He is an example for many Europeans”, said the EMP Philippe De Backer (Open Vld).

Mr De Backer gave the award to Pierre Kompany, the father of the Red Devils and Manchester City captain. “I am very proud of my son and happy that he has been recognised today above all as the man he is”, he said.

The “New European of the Year” award is an initiative by the European Organisation UNITEE, which is a group for immigrant entrepreneurs and professionals. The nearly 80 member associations are made up of around 15,000 entrepreneurs and businessmen from 26 European countries, according to its internet site.
