British Prime Minister Theresa May will present her project aimed at protecting the rights of EU citizens living in the UK to her European counterparts on Thursday evening. "I will outline some of the UK's intentions", May said when she arrived at the meeting of heads of state and government in Brussels.
The conservative intends to explain to her counterparts how her country "proposes to protect the rights of EU citizens living in the UK", but also how it intends to "ensure that the rights of British citizens living in Europe are protected." She also welcomed the start of the negotiations on the Brexit, calling them "very constructive".
Discussions on divorce with London officially began on Monday, almost three months after the triggering of Article 50, which regulates the exit of an EU country.
On his arrival at the European Council, Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel also spoke of the Brexit, calling in particular for quick negotiations on the rights of citizens who will be affected by the British exit from the Union.
While European Council President Donald Tusk said he was dreaming that the Brexit would be reversible and that the United Kingdom would eventually remain in the Union, he noted that the British had made a choice in a referendum and that it should be respected. "It is up to the United Kingdom to decide what it does with its membership to the Union", he said.
