European measures in response to the U.S. move to hike customs tariffs on steel and aluminum from the European Union (EU) will go into effect in July, the European Commission announced on Wednesday. The Commission endorsed on Wednesday the imposition by the EU of additional duties on a list of goods in response to the increased U.S. tariffs, which entered into effect in early June.
European Commission Vice-President Maros Sefcovic said in Brussels that the compensatory duties were compliant with the rules of the EU and World Trade Organisation and constituted “a measured and proportionate response” to the U.S. decision.
