The athlete Tarik Moukrime from Verviers (aged 22), who came 8th in the European Championships for 1500m in August at Zurich, has cancer. Doctor Maurice Joris announced the athlete has glandular cancer in situ during a press conference on Thursday. The tumor was found at the beginning of December as the athlete had been suffering since a training camp in Lanzarote. Tests confirmed a glandular cancer. The athlete underwent surgery on the 9th of December. He’ll start chemotherapy on Monday, which will last three months. His return has therefore been delayed until the Spring.

The athlete has said he is determined to fight and is already aiming for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. He also wants to take part in the World Championships in Peking in August 2015.

His high level athlete contract with the Brussels-Wallonia Federation is not danger, said the cabinet of the French-language Sports-minister René Collin. Moukrine will continue to be supported by the ministry and Adeps, said Mr Collins’ spokesperson.
