A wide-ranging operation against illegal herbicides has taken place in several countries, including Belgium. NVWA, the Dutch Food Agency, seized some 104,000 litres of pesticides, whose fake labels said they were vegetable oil. The Belgian operation was mostly in the port of Antwerp but no illegal herbicides were discovered.
Results of the operation, which took place between November 16th and 27th, were revealed by Europol and NVWA on Friday. There were checks in particular at Schiphol airport, in the port of Rotterdam, and at the border with Belgium.
Controls at the port of Antwerp targeted imports in particular, according to Afsca (Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain). Customs authorities pointed to several containers which we checked, they say. Over forty containers, representing 2,700 tons of merchandise, were thus examined. But no illegal herbicide was found.
As well as in the Netherlands and in Belgium, the operation took place simultaneously in Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and Slovenia, where a total of 86,000 litres of pesticides were seized.
