The European Union is “determined to retain the group of 27”, following the historic decision of the United Kingdom to leave the European bloc. Donald Tusk, the President of the European Council, said this on Friday.

“Although it is an historic moment, it is most definitely not a time for hysterical reactions,” stressed Mr Tusk, speaking in a serious tone, during a brief statement.

“We prepared for this negative scenario,” he said, before stating that the rights and obligations of member states would continue to apply in respect of the United Kingdom, until the country’s actual exit from the Union.

Mr Tusk concluded his speech by acknowledging that recent years had been particularly “hard for the European Union,” adding, “that which does not kill you, makes you stronger.”
