The city of Brussels officially opened the annual Foire du Midi on Saturday afternoon, as announced by the city’s Economic Affairs alderman Didier Wauters from Les Engagés, marking the start of the fair’s 145th edition, which will run until 24 August.

Belgium’s fair culture, recognised as UNESCO World Heritage since 2024, is deeply embedded in the nation’s identity, according to the Brussels fairground operators. The fair brings together generations, both young and old, for a day of entertainment, food, drinks, and leisurely strolls among the stalls. “It is hard to find a Brussels resident who has never visited the Foire du Midi,” they noted.

This year promises to be no different. The Brussels fairground operators and the city of Brussels anticipate attracting up to a million visitors to the fair near the South Station. The 145-year-old fair features both traditional operators and new attractions, including "The Hurricane" and "Mission Impossible Tower."

Each year, well-known figures introduce the fair. Journalist and presenter Sabrina Jacobs, named Bruxelloise of the Year, serves as the event’s godmother. The godfather is Pablo Andres, a Brussels comedian better known as Agent Verhaegen. Kevin the Showman continues as the fair’s mascot.

The fair welcomes all Brussels residents, including those less fortunate. On 7 August, the Foire du Midi will hold its annual Day of Sick Children. The final Sunday will feature reduced prices, offering an opportunity for disadvantaged individuals to enjoy the attractions.
